Cheap Eats: Seafood Dinner Ideas for Under $20

It is actually easier than you might think to feed the whole family a delicious seafood meal for under $20. When you're utilising lesser-known, seasonal species, staying under budget is truly a breeze.

Here are some simple and affordable dinner ideas for when you're feeling the pinch.

RED GURNARD

Gurnard isn't often spoken about in the mainstream, but this fish a fantastic dupe for the uber-popular Flathead! Recently, 91制片厂Seafood School manager Sally bought enough Gurnard fillets to feed her family of four for just over 10 bucks, leaving plenty of breathing room to pull together a simple salad and a side of potatoes. Gurnard also works beautifully in a homemade fish and chips - try this recipe.

SPAGHETTI VONGOLE

Pasta is an affordable go-to for many families, and it's such an easy meal to add some nutritious seafood to. Our pick if you're on a budget is grabbing some Vongole, Clams, or Pipis and tossing them through. Depending on what's in season, these bivalves shouldn't set you back more than $15/kg.

Recipe here.

SALMON OFFCUTS

If you're a fan of Atlantic Salmon, Salmon Belly offcuts are a must-try. 500 grams won't set you back more than $7, then it's as simple as throwing together a teriyaki marinade, grilling them on the BBQ, and serving them with rice.

SARDINES

If your only experience with Sardines is mushy ones from a tin, we’d forgive you for being hesitant about them. But they are one of the most nutritious and affordable Australian seafood species... It's just about working with their punchy flavour in the right way.

This recipe uses a zesty parmesan sage crust to combat Sardines' high oil content and strong flavour profile. Pair them with a salad and you've got an easy meal for four that sits well under $20.

LEATHERJACKET

While Leatherjackets are a difficult fish to fillet (because of their bone structure) they’re one of the easiest fish to eat off the bone; the large flakes of sweet, white meat lift away easily. Plus, they're exceedingly cheap. Think under $10 to feed a family of four... With leftovers! This recipe is a stunner.
